Artist statement
“Know thyself deathless and able to know all things, all arts, sciences, the way of every life. Become higher than the highest height and lower than the lowest depth. Amass in thyself all senses of animals, fire, water, dryness and moistness. Think of thyself in all places at the same time, earth, sea, sky, not yet born, in the womb, young, old, dead, and in the after death state.”
~ Ancient Egyptian Proverb
Visha Jayasena is a visionary artist and graphic designer based in Petersham, Sydney. As a Sri-Lankan born Australian, she's always been interested in the exploration of identity and culture in relation to the diaspora. Her main body of work is inspired by entheogens and psychedelics, along with a focus on the Tibetan and Egyptian 'Book of the Dead', and is an exploration of connections between the Indus Valley (India) and Nile Valley (Kemet) wisdom systems.
‘Amaraloka’ (Sanskrit: 'Deathless Realm') incorporates traditional elements of spirituality, cultural identity and political worldview. Drawing inspiration from the teachings of Master Plants & Entheogens, Tantra, Yoga, Dzogchen, Advaita, and Buddhism, along with the ancient cultural philosophies of Tibet, India and Kemet (Egypt), it aims to present Death in a new light to the audience.
