What is a yidam?
Yidam is sometimes translated by the terms "meditational deity" who are manifestations of Buddhahood or enlightened mind. During personal meditation (sādhana) practice, the yogi identifies their own form, attributes and mind with those of a yidam for the purpose of transformation. The symbolic representations of the Yidam (conveyed with attributes such as poses, mudras and symbolic items) help the mind focus on the needed deity.
